A Corsican descended from Tuscan nobility, Napoleon Bonaparte took charge of a French nation struggling to the overcome the chaotic aftermath of the French Revolution. With a vision of a French empire he orchestrated France's expansion across continental Europe and brought a semblance of order and democracy to the lands he ruled. His military achievements and institutional legacies make him one of the towering figures of world history.
After an education in military schools in Brienne and Paris, Napoleon became a second lieutenant in the French artillery. His victory against the British in Toulon earned him a promotion to brigadier general in 1794. Victories against the Austrians and Piedmontese led to the favorable Treaty of Campo Formio in 1797. An ambitious leader whom the French Directorate was anxious to keep from Paris, they charged him with invading Europe.
