Biography
The son of Albert Gore Sr. (the three-term New Deal senator from Tennessee), Al Gore claimed that his experience in Vietnam, his father's Senate election loss, and the incendiary administration of Richard Nixon discouraged him from entering politics. Despite the fact that he and his father opposed the war, Gore went to Vietnam where he served as an Army reporter for the 20th Engineering Battalion. Upon his return, he worked for the Tennessean, a Nashville newspaper that had re-printed his army newspaper reports while he was still on his tour of duty. As an investigative reporter he uncovered evidence that led to the conviction of local politicians on bribery and corruption charges. A stint as a homebuilder and time at the Vanderbilt divinity school followed - but when a seat for the House of Representatives opened in Tennessee's 4th district, Gore went for it.
