Biography
Catherine Zeta-Jones is a relative newcomer to Hollywood, but her role in The Mask of Zorro in 1998 catapulted her into the ranks of Hollywood's sex symbols. However, this Welsh-born actress had been a star in the UK for years before the US "discovered her".
Born September 25, 1969 to working class parents in a fishing town in Wales, Zeta-Jones began her acting career at the age of 11 with the lead in Annie. After touring with The Pajama Game, the 15-year-old actress got her actor's guild card and moved to London. Within two years, she had secured the lead role in the West End Production of 42nd Street. In 1991, Zeta-Jones signed to appear in the British TV series The Darling Buds of May and she became a British superstar. However, being a star had its price and Zeta-Jones moved to America rather than try to outrun the paparrazzi in the UK.
In the early ‘90s, Zeta-Jones had several small film roles (Sheharazade/1001 Nights 1990, Christopher Columbus: The Discovery 1992 and Splitting Heirs 1993). However, her big break in Hollywood came when Steven Spielberg saw her performance in the miniseries Titanic (1996) and cast her in the role of Elena opposite Anthony Hopkins and Antonio Banderas in The Mask of Zorro (1998). After the release of Zorro, Zeta-Jones continued her on-screen success in Entrapment and The Haunting (both 1999).
