One would never know by listening to Charlize Theron speak, just how hard she had to work to lose her native accent. Born in Benoni, South Africa, this dancer/model turned actress's first language is Afrikaans. After constructive criticism to drop her accent, she spent hours watching television and mimicking American actors on re-runs.

Theron's beginnings in South Africa were humble. She began studying ballet as a child and was able to dance professionally in Johannesburg. Just before her father died in the early 1990's, Theron's mother and friends entered her into a modeling contest. She won a modeling contract and moved to Europe to work. She only stayed here for a couple of years before moving to USA and returning to her earlier love of ballet. She studied with the Joffrey Ballet, but soon had to stop after injuring her knee.
