Forrest E Mars Sr's Kevo

Forrest Edward Mars Sr. is the famous recluse that built Mars Inc. into the international mega-company it is today. Most notably, Mars introduced his version of a European candy to the US and called them M&Ms. An only child, Mars' parents began making candy in 1911. His parents divorced when he was six and Mars then spent most of his youth in Canada with his grandparents. His father Frank remarried and relocated to Minnesota, continuing on as a candymaker. Before taking over the company his father created Snickers and left the recipe for his son along with the company .

The father and son duo next invented Milky Way and 3 Musketeers before Mars Jr. left the partnership due to his father?s refusal to expand into Canada. Armed with the rights to Milky Way, Mars made his way to London, England to start Food Manufacturers, Inc. in 1932. He became one of Europe's best known confectioners and later expanded into canned pet foods. Mars' father passed away in 1934, but another three decades passed before Mars merged his father's company with his own. (Frank's widow refused to give up the rights and sell.)

Mars returned to the United States in 1939, and created M&Ms after glimpsing a similar candy on the battlefields of Spain during the civil war. The idea took off in the US and the candies soon became the most popular in the country. Many years later, Universal Studios wanted to use M&Ms in a product placement for Steven Spielberg?s classic E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, but Mars refused. Reese's Pieces were chosen instead, prompting sales of the candy to triple after the film's release.

Before turning operations over to his children in 1973, Mars relocated company headquarters from Chicago to McLean, Virginia. He then opened a lab in Las Vegas to experiment with liqueur-filled chocolates. That endeavor grew into the Ethel M company, still in operation today.

Before his death from natural causes in 1999, Mars was ranked 29 on the Forbes 400 for 1998. His son Forrest Jr. retired in 1999, leaving operations to his other son, John.

they worked together through the birth of Milky Way, Snickers and 3 Muskateers but they had fights so Forrest left with the rights to Milky Way
