Heidi Fleiss, the self-confessed high-flying Hollywood Madam of the early 1990s, grew up as the epitome of the spoiled Southern California rich kid. One of six children of a celebrated pediatrician father, there was nothing that Fleiss was left wanting for as a child. Even when, at the age of 18, she caused a car accident while under the influence of drugs that almost severed her sister's arm, the pampered girl was given a new jeep to drive and was not charged or reprimanded for the ordeal.

After being involved in a relationship with a rich older man, Bernie Cornfeld, who dazzled her with his high-living ways, Fleiss seemed to get a taste of the jet-set life that would control her actions for the next several years. Once the relationship had broken up - and a subsequent affair with Ivan Nagy had ended - Fleiss began to work for the notorious madam Alex Fleming in her bordello. After gaining some experience and learning how the business operated, Fleiss struck out on her own, building a competing business that boasted Hollywood actors and businessmen as well as socialites from around the world. Of the high prices that Fleiss commanded for her girls, she kept 40% for herself, and was soon moving in the echelons that she had dreamed of.

Too much bragging about her newfound circumstances brought her world crashing down around her, however. In June 1993, Fleiss was arrested at her home while taking out the trash. She served time in prison for money laundering, tax evasion and pandering, gaining release in September 1999. In October of that same year, Fleiss filed for bankruptcy after having gone into debt over her legal fees and owing back rent for the business - a specialty underwear store - that she started up before going to prison.
