"Ivan Milat worked in construction with a road construction team in Australia, and developed a fascination for guns during this time. Milat was a misfit from the get go, with an immense ego, and was inclined to have a preoccupation with cleanliness. With a failed marriage behind him, Milat sought revenge on society by kidnapping, torturing and executing young tourists. Milatís abductions were well planned as he chose backpackers as his targets because they were inclined to travel alone. The knowledge that they would not be missed for a week or more, and were often eager for a free lift off of a friendly driver, gave him added security in his masterminding. Milat would drive to a secluded spot where he would then overpower them, tie them up, and drive to the Belanglo State Forest. In the added seclusion of the forest, Milat would spend his time torturing the victims. After he got his kicks from torturing them, Milat would either shoot or stab them to death. Milatís inevitable mistake came about with the failed abduction of a courageous English backpacker named Paul Onions. Milat picked the young hitchhiker up at the Casula News Agency, near Liverpool. He offered to take the man to Mildura where he was heading to pick fruit. Onions, a seasoned traveler and ex-Navy Sailor thought he was safe enough, and hopped in. After some friendly conversation where Milat introduced himself as ""Bill"", Milat turned nasty, complaining about The English Army in Ireland, and how there were too many Asians in Australia. Milat then stopped the car, and pulled a revolver on the hitchhiker. Onions tried to escape, but Milat produced some rope that he carried in his car for such occasions and began to tie him up with it. Onions realized his dire situation, and jumped out of the truck. The fact that Milat had parked on a major highway did not deter him from racing after the man while firing shots at him. In desperation, Onion threw himself in front of a van, opened the door, and jumped in. He then begged the driver to take him to the nearest Police Station, which was in a nearby township called Bowral. Despite his ordeal, Police took little action, and the report was soon forgotten. Onions was later awarded $50,000.00 compensation for his ordeal, which he donated to the families of the deceased.

This and other leads led Police to raid his house in the outer Sydney Suburb of Eagle-Vale . In Milatís residence they found guns, and skeletons with bullets still ingrained in the bones. They also found Paul Onions backpack and passport, and many of the missing hitchhikers belongings, including a water bottle and backpack, a photo of Milatís girlfriend wearing a t- shirt that belonged to one of the victims, a bloodstained rope, and a large quantity of knives.
