Biography

John Michael Caifano (a.k.a. Marshall Caifano, John Marshall, Michael Heale, etc.) and his brother "Fat Lennie" emerged as kingpins of the Chicago crime syndicate in the early 1950s. After Lennie was killed, Caifano took over Chicago gambling operations in Las Vegas. Caifano was a prime suspect in more than ten murders, including that of Russian Louis Strauss in 1953.

In his early years in Chicago, Caifano shot gambling rival Frank Quotrocci in the head at a downtown tavern, but avoided arrest. Police mistakenly arrested Matt Capone for the murder when they found a hat bearing the initials "MC" in the street.

Caifano established autonomy over his gambling turf in the uptown neighborhood of Chicago. He was a suspect in at least ten other mob related murders including that of Estelle Carey, a Chicago cocktail waitress who was involved with Nick Circella, a member of the Willie Bioff movie extortion ring.
