John Michael Caifano (a.k.a. Marshall Caifano, John Marshall, Michael Heale, etc.) and his brother "Fat Lennie" emerged as kingpins of the Chicago crime syndicate in the early 1950s. After Lennie was killed, Caifano took over Chicago gambling operations in Las Vegas. Caifano was a prime suspect in more than ten murders, including that of Russian Louis Strauss in 1953.
In his early years in Chicago, Caifano shot gambling rival Frank Quotrocci in the head at a downtown tavern, but avoided arrest. Police mistakenly arrested Matt Capone for the murder when they found a hat bearing the initials "MC" in the street.
Caifano established autonomy over his gambling turf in the uptown neighborhood of Chicago. He was a suspect in at least ten other mob related murders including that of Estelle Carey, a Chicago cocktail waitress who was involved with Nick Circella, a member of the Willie Bioff movie extortion ring. The young woman was tied to a chair in her apartment and set on fire when the mob suspected Circella of saying too much to the government. The murder was never solved.
In March of 1980, Caifano was arrested and convicted of interstate transportation of stolen securities in West Palm Beach. He is currently imprisoned in the federal penitentiary at Sandstone, Minnesota where he is serving two concurrent twenty year sentences.

My father remembers seeing the old man.
He was a gentlemen, my father said.
He only stood 5'5 about 150 pounds, but he could give you a look that could shake you in ur shoes.

I spent a few years with Marshall Caifano at Sandtone FCI, I was the only ITALIAN in his housing unit, I looked out for him made sure he got to watch golf on tv when he wanted, he was a very quiet laid back type of guy, he was well liked and certainly respected, a true honor to have known him, I was happy to know he got to spend over a decade of freedom after his release from Sandstone and died with HONOR.

to the friends of carmine, marshall was my great uncle my father's uncle and to my friend who spent time with him at sandstone he was a giant influence in my life teaching about respect and honor! he enjoyed 14 years out enjoying his golf game and good health!

I ran into Carmine a couple of weeks ago. I told him about this site... He said his family is from NYC not Las Vegas or Chicago.

marshall was in vegas before tony came out. that was along time ago! remember he would be in his late 90's. there are caifano's in new york,they are relatives,marshall had three kids one female in her 60's who was adopted and from a second marrige one girl 45 and one son 43 biological.he was a quiet guy at home good sense of humor. dont get me wrong he was my uncle i also saw his mean streak and it was'nt pretty!! he may have been small but he had the balls of an elephant.
