Born August 23, 1978, Kobe Bryant dominated Southeastern Pennsylvania basketball before taking his game to the NBA. He completed his four years at Lower Marion High School as the all-time leading scorer in Southeastern Pennsylvania history. On the heels of Kevin Garnett's success, the USA Today High School Player of the Year made himself eligible for the NBA Draft. The Charlotte Hornets made Bryant the 13th pick, immediately trading him to the Los Angeles Lakers for Vlade Divac.
The basketball world was not disappointed. Bryant was pure excitement all season. He was the leading scorer in the Schick Rookie Game with a record 31 points and became the first Laker to win the Nestle Crunch Slam-Dunk Contest. A place on the All-NBA Rookie Second Team awaited Bryant following the 1996-97 season. Bryant was just as exciting in his second season, appearing in his first All-Star Game as the youngest player ever at the age of 19, breaking Shaquille O'Neal's record. All-Star Weekend 1997 held a great deal of excitement for Bryant, also winning the Nestle Slam-Dunk Contest. The Lakers began to count on Bryant as one of their go-to players. O'Neal and Bryant team to form one of the most potent inside-outside combinations in the league.
