Biography
At age ten, Laurence Fishburne began his acting career on the New York stage and made his film debut two years later as the "Me" in Cornbread, Earl and Me (1975). After lying about his age (actually 15), Fishburne spent 18 months in the Philippines filming Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now (1979). He has appeared in several other Coppola films, as well as playing Swain in The Color Purple (1986) and Dap Dunlap in Spike Lee's School Daze (1988). He was featured in the comical recurring role of Cowboy Curtis on TV's Pee-wee's Playhouse and continues to alternate between stage and film.
Fishburne starred as a loose cannon former convict in the 1990 world premiere of August Wilson's Two Trains Running at Yale Repertory Theater and recreated the role on Broadway, winning a Tony for it in 1992. He brought tremendous moral authority to his portrayal of Furious Styles, a model father who steers his son away from L.A.
