Whatever else may be said about the life and accomplishments of L. Ron Hubbard, he refused to be pigeon-holed. A prolific writer for 1940s dime store magazines, Hubbard churned out westerns, science-fiction and fantasy novels at an astounding rate (at the height of his writing career, it has been estimated that he wrote 100,000 words a month). It was from his writing that his most famous accomplishment came: the founding of the often-controversial Church of Scientology.
Hubbard himself was an enigma. He led a life full of career changes and emotional setbacks. A one-time explorer, naval officer and glider pilot, he was also divorced twice, married three times and did research into drug abuse rehabilitation. Some sources claim that he was also an inveterate liar; his stories of his military days are filled with heroic exploits, dangerous adventures and crippling injuries that simply do not mesh with the American Navy’s official records.
