Biography
The seldom-seen and enigmatic leader of Afghanistan's Taliban government and Militia, Mullah Mohammad Omar made a name for himself as a Mujahideen rebel during the Afghani war against the Soviets. Originally studying to become a Muslim Cleric, Omar left his studies in Pakistan to join the guerilla fighters in ridding Afghanistan of the infidel invaders. While fighting with the Mujahideen, Omar lost one eye but proved that he was a capable soldier and eventually earned the position of Deputy-Chief Commander.
After the Soviets were driven out in the late 1980s, Omar disappeared for some time but then reappeared in the early 1990s, again proclaiming that God spoke to him through a dream and told him to go forth, form an army, and bring peace to Afghanistan. The Taliban made their appearance in 1994 and by 1996 they had seized Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, establishing themselves as the ruling power.
