Biography
Oral Roberts was born in Potomac County, Oklahoma in 1918, the son of a Methodist reverend. He left home while still young, only to be forced back by the onset of tuberculosis. While ill, he attended a revival meeting led by George Moncey, who prayed for the sick Roberts. The young man was healed of his illness and, deeply affected by the event, Roberts reportedly gave his first sermon that very night.
Roberts went on to be ordained by the Pentecostal Holiness Church, serving as a traveling evangelist for some time before being called to assume his first position as pastor. He resigned this position after a year, having found that he could not persuade his congregation to merge with the Pentecostal Holiness Church. Roberts went on to study at Philips University, where he was to reach a turning point in his life. According to Roberts, he heard the voice of God call him to heal.
