Patricia Hearst Shaw held a nation captive in 1974 when she was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army from her apartment in Berkeley, a home she shared with her fiancee, Steven Weed. The daughter of Randolph Apperson Hearst, Patty Hearst was used to her family being in the media spotlight. Her father was chair of the Hearst Corporation and her grandfather was the outrageous patriarch whom Orson Welles used as the model for his classic film Citizen Kane.
Hearst grew up in Hillsborough, California. As a child, her father took her hunting, deep-sea fishing and skeet shooting. She attended Santa Catalina School and transferred to the Crystal Springs School in her junior year. It was here that she met Steven Weed, a math tutor who eventually became her boyfriend. Hearst lived with Weed while at Menlo College and the two moved to Berkeley when Weed received a teaching fellowship at the University of California.
