Peyton Manning was born in New Orleans in 1976, and grew up there as his father had played for the NFL's Saints and lived in New Orleans even after retiring. Manning, who as a child would lie in bed and watch tapes of his father's greatest games, was an exceptional quarterback at Isidore High School in New Orleans before moving on to the University of Tennessee, where he became a true freshman starting quarterback. At Tennessee, Manning excelled, becoming a three-time Academic All America honoree, leading his team to a national championship, and maintaining a 3.61 GPA. He graduated Cum Laude in 1998 with a degree in Speech Communications and quickly became the first player picked in the 1998 NFL college draft, going to the Indianapolis Colts.<br /> Peyton Manning was born in New Orleans in 1976, and grew up there as his father had played for the NFL's Saints and lived in New Orleans even after retiring. He graduated Cum Laude in 1998 with a degree in Speech Communications and quickly became the first player picked in the 1998 NFL college draft, going to the Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts, at the time, had put up just a few winning seasons in recent times, and had become the perennial basement dwellers in the AFC East Division, and Manning's selection brought hope to the city for improvement. Yet Manning got off to a rough start that year, throwing more interceptions than completions in the early weeks and raising doubts about his ability to compete in the NFL. Nonetheless, Manning stuck it out, saying that even a rough year would make him a better quarterback in the future and by the end of the season, Manning was dissecting defenses with uncanny accuracy. In 1999, Manning gained running back Edgerrin James and that seemed to be the missing link as Manning suddenly launched his team to a winning record and placed himself in the top five passers in the AFC. No longer were scouts and reporters saying that he wasn't mobile enough or didn't have a strong enough arm -- Manning had arrived.

Manning's achievements off the field are just as important as his on-the-field ones in establishing his prototypical quarterback image. Besides being a mild-mannered, soft spoken man, Manning has dedicated himself to the Court Appointed Special Advocates cause, a charity that helps foster children learn to make the right decisions and lead healthy lifestyles. Manning was touched by the tragedy at Columbine High School, and decided that kids needed help making important decisions, so he became CASA's national spokesperson and set up his website to help promote their cause. In addition, Manning is deeply involved with the Special Olympics, the YMCA, and other youth organizations, showing his concern for today's young people and his willingness to donate his time and resources to serving them.

Both on and off the field, Peyton Manning is one of the NFL's winners. His charisma, talent, and compassion have brought him a legion of loyal fans, and have allowed him to follow in his father's footsteps while still remaining out of his shadow.
