Biography
Saddam Hussein was born on April 28, 1937, to a family of peasant serfs in the village of al-Awja in the Tikrit region near the Tigris river. It has been reported that Saddam was abused and neglected as a child. Saddam Hussein's biological father abandoned him and his mother when he was still an infant. Saddam's mother remarried and Saddam spent his first years with his stepfather, Ibrahim Hassan. Unfortunately, Hussein's stepfather was also abusive; often beating and insulting Saddam while making him work long hours in the fields and keeping him from school.
When Saddam was ten years old he was sent to live with his uncle Khairallah Tulfah in Baghdad. He applied to the Iraqi military academy and was rejected in effect cutting off the once chance of mobility of social advancement for peasant boys.
