Sarah Michelle Gellar was born on April 14, 1977 in Manhattan, where she grew up on the Upper East Side with her divorced mother, a schoolteacher. (Gellar's father had left her mother in 1984.) Gellar, an only child, was said to be very much a "ham" when it came to her personality and social interactions, a natural when it came to acting.

Gellar's beginning as an actor is the stereotypical, fairytale version of being "discovered." While eating in a restaurant with her mother, three-and-a-half year old Gellar was spotted by an agent who recognized her potential in acting. A short while later, Gellar was starring with Valerie Harper in the movie An Invasion of Privacy. Although the movie was not a blockbuster, it was just the beginning of Gellar's lifelong career in the entertainment industry.
