Shannen Doherty was born in Memphis, Tennessee, where she lived until she was seven. Her family relocated to Los Angeles where her father started a West Coast branch of the family transportation business. Doherty became interested in acting at an early age and, while in Los Angeles, her passion for acting heightened.

Doherty got her first big acting break when Michael Landon discovered her on an episode of Father Murphy. A fan of Landon�s show Little House on the Prairie, she experienced a dream come true when, at age 11, she was cast as Jenny Wilder in the series Little House: A New Beginning.

Doherty made her film debut in Ron Howard's Night Shift (1982), but her occasional feature films have generally been less notable. With the exception of the black comedy Heathers (1989), the majority of her projects did nothing for her career. After a bit of a hiatus, Doherty returned to films in 1995 with Kevin Smith's Mallrats.
