Mariah Carey is a highly successful singer, songwriter, and actress. Born in Long Island, New York, Carey began singing as a child. Her entrance into the music industry was in 1988, when she began work on her first album. In the nearly two decades since, Carey has become one of the most acclaimed female performers in contemporary music.

Carey's self-titled debut album, Mariah Carey rose to the top of the Billboard charts in 1990 with four number one singles. The first single from her sophomore effort, "Emotions," also hit number one making Carey the only performer to have their first five singles hit number one. Carey's Christmas recording, Merry Christmas, launched in 1994 to great popularity and has since become the best selling Christmas album of all time.

Grammy nominations and awards have been in great numbers for Carey who won Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Mariah Carey in 1991. Her fifth album, Daydream received six nominations in 1996. Carey's latest album, The Emancipation of Mimi garnered three Grammys for Best Contemporary R&B Album, Best Female R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song.

Aside from her career as a singer and songwriter, Carey has ventured into acting. She debuted on the screen in 1990 as a talentless opera singer in The Bachelor. Her second film, Glitter, was semi-autobiographical. It failed to attract praise from critics and was not commercially well received. Since the failure of the film, Carey has acted in a handful of independent films that have garnered her minor critical applause.
